I still have a permit, and have one more driving lesson before I can take the license test, and a defensive driving lesson. I just turned 21. My permit is now expired. I now have to apply for an over 21 permit, wait for it to arrive in the mail, then take my last drive, and then take the license test. I have to fill out paperwork to get a permit that I will only have for at most, 2 months, only to have to fill out more paperwork for a drivers license soon after. I told my mom I wanted my last drive before I turned 21, so I didnt have to deal with that, but she assured me that I didnt need an over 21 permit. Also, Is there a grace period where I can drive with an expired permit?

Just out of curiosity, wait did you wait so long to get your license?

wasnt my choice. My mom is a psychotherapist, she thought that a 16 year old wasnt mature enough to drive.

But why didn't you just get it a year ago or the year before that or the year before that?

lets just say having a psychotherapist parent means they are gonna be the authority on everything you do. I really had no choice but to let her decide when I was ready

Damn but even at 18, 19 and 20 she still didn't think it was okay? 16 I understand but 20 I don't, have you really matured that much in the last 12 months? I know some immature 21 year olds that I wouldn't let near my car or anything with 4 wheels.

I feel you, but life tip fight back. Not physically or verbally, just take a position and stand up for it especially now that you're 21, you aren't a kid anymore.

I 100,000% agree with you but in this situation I can kind of understand it, especially if denver is still living at home. If his Mom is letting him stay at her house instead of pulling the your 18 get out stuff not rocking the boat probably makes life easier for him. I moved out when I was young (by choice) and it did make going to school and stuff considerably harder.

You need a permit to get your license once you're over 18? I waited until I turned 18 to make it easier, aced the written test. Aced the driving test. Walked out with a license. Never once got a permit.

I completely understand her house her rules, that's perfectly fine. What I'm saying is yes 16 is quite young to drive, but 20 years old isn't. I would've conceded that okay at 16 you don't think I'm mature enough but what about 18, 19 and 20? I would've just tried to have an adult conversation about it and explain why I should at least get my license (if for anything else to have lower insurance rates once I was old enough to get a car).

I'm not saying start an argument about it or call your mom names and catch a fit but to lay out the reasons why you felt that you were old enough to get a license. Plus think about it, what parent will throw their child out for going out on their own to a driving school getting driving lessons and taking their road test? If anything it shows you were mature enough to go out there and do what you needed to do.

I've seen this argument before in regards to people getting jobs, 17-18 year olds saying "My parent's won't let me get a job", what parent that wants their kid suckling at the teat all their lives, no parent. I mean unless you get a job at a strip club or something there shouldn't be a real issue.

The only thing I can think of is the OP has done some very careless acts that would raise concern about them having the freedom to operate an automobile. If that isn't the case this type of hand holding does more harm than good, case in point OP now must go through this ridiculous process of getting another permit just to do everything he could've done 6 months ago and avoided. 21 isn't a magical number that automatically means you are now mature enough to do whatever you want, some people are mature at 18 others aren't until they are 30.

One, thats not me. Im not stupid enough to post my permit online. Second of all, thats a license that expired in 2011, If you read the article youd know I just turned 21 yesterday, and I dont have a license yet. Three, I get the reference now.

Well it seems you aren't smart enough to get your learner's permit at 15.5 years old and your driver's license at age 16 like any other red blooded American boy.
